Staff Spotlight: Sham Bin Salleh

Syafisham (Sham) Bin Salleh is a Front End Developer based in our KL office.

He is responsible for developing Ultradata's customer-facing solutions and integrating key software solutions such as Ultracs App, Ultracs CMS and My Viewpoint into the Ultracs core banking system.

Sham is an accomplished programmer with varied experience across several industries and business environments. He began his career at a startup in the oil and gas sector, which gave him invaluable experience developing products (including a Point-of-Sale System) from scratch. Sham then moved to a business process automation software company, where he focused on invoice and email automation solutions. His next role took him to the financial sector, working at one of Malaysia's major banks, where he played a key role in maintaining their software. Fuelled by a desire to help build the systems he had become accustomed to, Sham moved to Ultradata.

"I enjoy working with financial technology and banks. And what led me to work at Ultradata was a chance to move behind the scenes and help shape the financial technology that banks and their customers rely on."

Sham puts his impressive career trajectory down to a valuable lesson learnt early on in his journey as he navigated the unchartered waters of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"A defining moment in my career came while working in an industry highly impacted by COVID-19 (oil and gas). In my case some serious downsizing occurred – and I believe that due to my specialised experience I was not a casualty. This experience taught me that you can never be too comfortable in your role and profession. Instead, you should always look for ways to upskill and future-proof your career."

Sham brings a broad perspective, shaped by experience across a diverse range of projects and sectors, to the Ultradata team. His skillset makes a valuable contribution to Ultradata's financial technology products and the efficiency of the software development lifecycle.

The day-to-day

Sham's work days are typically split between contributing to new development projects and supporting existing ones through maintenance and bug fixes.

For Sham, the best part about working at Ultradata is the support he receives from his colleagues and manager.

"My manager, Greg Woods, is fantastic at what he does, and his support makes Ultradata a great place to work. Even if he isn't directly involved in what I'm working on, he will go above and beyond to take the time to understand the task and any challenges I might be facing so he can offer his expertise, support and collaboration."

And while the flexible, hybrid working policy ensures an optimal work-life balance, the KL office is the place to be, an underrated benefit of hybrid work is that it makes office days more fun.

"All my colleagues in KL are fantastic, and there's a strong culture of collaboration and social connection. We've got a nice modern office that makes working fun. There's also no shortage of eateries nearby, so it's common for a group of us to go and enjoy our lunch breaks together.

Life outside Ultradata

When he's not working at Ultradata, Sham lives a full life. A keen runner, Sham gets a 5km run in every weekday. On weekends, he is part of a run club that participates in weekly competitions. He also enjoys hiking, recently completing a 2-day trek of Mount Kinabalu.

But he's not stopping there. Sham has plans to compete in an IRONMAN competition in Malaysia, which will see him compete in a triathlon that combines running, swimming and cycling course as part of this mammoth event.

Sham also enjoys discovering new places to eat, an interest that has inspired a personal development project set to impact the hospitality space profoundly.

"I've been learning to develop AI Applications in my spare time. Right now, I'm working on an app that allows a group to easily and accurately split their bill at a café or restaurant based on a photo of the receipt."

True to his growth mindset, Sham hopes to continue his pursuit of app development, inspired by the opportunity to build innovations that improve the world.
